Urban renewal projects finalised

KOCHI: The city corporation has finalised development projects,
estimated at Rs. 11,150 crores, under the Jawaharlal Nehru National
Urban Renewal Mission.
These projects will be submitted to the Union Government through
the Kerala State Urban Development Project (KSUDP) for approval.
The projects were presented by chairmen of various committees on
Saturday. Most of the projects have been listed under transportation,
water supply and sewerage. Others are in land use, environment,
heritage tourism and urban poverty alleviation.
The corporation will hold a detailed discussion on the City Development
Plan, prepared to get funds from the mission. The plan includes development
projects for areas in the city and the limits of Kalamassery and
Thripunithura municipalities and 11 panchayats neighbouring the corporation
areas.
At the presentation, V. Gopalakrishna Pillai, Senior Town
Planner, Greater Cochin Development Authority, presented projects,
estimated at Rs. 4,000 crores, in the sector covering traffic and
transportation. These included the outer ring road, one of the prestigious
projects conceived so far by the authority, 16 corridors to ease traffic
snarls, shifting of a bus terminal to Vytilla and construction of four
truck terminals at Thiruvankulam, Kalamassery, Kumbalam and Vallarpadom.
The Kerala Water Authority presented a project of Rs. 2,629 crores
for completing sewerage for the project area. Two proposals to bring
in water from the Periyar river and the Muvattupuzha for distribution
in the project area were also presented.
